Video of the day: Europe Day 53
We are safe and secure in Apatin, Republic of Serbia. We got here before the rain started.
The ferry sailed at 8 am and it took less than 10 minutes to get across to Újmohács. From there we had a 25 kms ride to the Hungary/Republic of Serbia border. We took a few pictures but it was all about ride ride ride!
We were 3rd in line at the border behind a small RV and a big diesel Mercedes. The two guys in the RV were refused entry into Serbia and the two vehicles had to backup. We got a wave from the customs booth and we got to jump the queue. We got the usual questions and one on our final destination. Once Hélène uttered ‘Istanbul’ it was ‘have a safe trip’ and we were done.
With a slight tail wind and not much to photograph, we were closing in on 56 kms when noon struck. We stopped in Sombor to eat our sandwiches. We did not see much of Sombor but the photo below sums up what we saw. We have buildings like that in Ottawa but there were many more in that area of Sombor we were in. I’ve looked at Sombor Wikipedia and they have nice old buildings.

After Sombor, it was another 25 kms or so to Apatin. There were two ways to get to Apatin: ride on busy Hwy 107 or take the safer detour on EuroVélo 6 but add 11 kms to the ride. With a good crosswind coming from the right we decided that the detour was the better choice. We got slowed by the wind quite a bit but got it done. We found that riding on the dyke was the least fun part of the ride.
We are here at the Garden House and it is very nice. We went for groceries together and found ourselves challenged by the weight scale. We even asked a man for help but quickly realized that was not a good idea. A lady quickly got us back on track. (see Hélène's video)
We also got to see one of the errand Serbian dogs. He managed to get inside the store, waiting for people to feed him.
We picked up street food (burgers & fries) for supper tonight.
