62.1 km - Total so far 2,787.00 km - Route pedalled. Relive Video (with pictures)
Video of the day: Europe Day 50We are safe and secure in the more easily pronounced town name of Simontornya, Hungary.
It was a 62 kilometre ride which we got done in 4 hours 11 minutes. We also got 50 kms done by 11:59 am.
Today’s ride was all about getting from A to B as quickly as possible because other than that first castle seen in ReLive, we had not identified anything of cultural or historical significance on the route. Having said that, we just discovered that in Tác, we missed the Roman town of Gorsium. Oh well, next time.
Hélène discovered that what we thought was a castle is in fact a Turkish Kula tower that dates back to the Ottoman Empire occupation. It is difficult for us to get information on Ottoman structures in Hungary because most of it is in Hungarian. Here is what we managed to find.
Kula Tower |
We spent quite a bit of time on a straight road with a posted speed of 80 kph but most vehicles were travelling at a much higher speeds. To amuse ourselves we started paying attention to the kilometre markers on the side of the road. Some were by themselves, while others were attached to posts holding up other signs. Absolutely gripping stuff that kept us going
. To think we could have been talking about Gorsium instead oh my!

We had hoped to check in early once we got to Simontornya but the pension was locked up tight and no one around. We went for a short ride to see a castle and visit the local Coop. This Coop had a great selection of desserts.

As the rain started, we made our way back to the pension. We were the only client until 6pm, one other guest showed up.
Tomorrow we are going to Szekszárd a mere 62 kms away. We should be over the border in Serbia in a couple of days.
