Day 13 - Koblenz to Bacharach

59.1 km - Total so far 685.8 km Route pedalled.      Relive Video (with pictures)

Video of the dayEurope Day 13

We spent the night in Koblenz, in a nice bachelor apartment kitty corner to a bakery. As you might expect, the bakery was our first stop.

If you are on a bicycle trip and you plan on quickly transiting through the city onto your next destination, Koblenz is not the city for you. In our neighborhood, there were plenty of narrow winding streets and the type of houses you find in the smaller villages.

As we neared the River Moselle, across the river we could see loads of tourists getting off busses. We also pedalled by a very large RV campground, we looked for pitched tent but could see none. It is just to cold at night.

Once crossed the Balduin Bridge, we were in sightseeing country. So much to see from the Keiser Wilhem monument, to the descriptions of the Ehrenbruitsrein Fortress and the Kaiserin-Augusta park. Barbara was kind enough to take our picture. It took almost an hour to cover 5 km.

Our past hostess, Claudia, told us that Koblenz was the start of castles along the Rhine. There seems to be at least one if not two castles on the hills above the village. Some villages have a smaller castle in the village but are surrounded by a wall. There are many bends in the Rhine and around each bend a surprise. This is best seen on ReLive. Not many bridges but lots of ferries.

A kind gentleman pointed out to us a marker that shows where a famous English artist painted from to capture German scenery in the 19th century. Learn more here.

Tonight we are staying in a self check-in hotel. There is no hotel staff. I was sent a video on how to check-in. After nearly 6 hours 54 minutes on the saddle, things did not work out as per the video. After help from the person watching me on camera we finally got in. It was a 1.5 km to get here, so we should be back on our route, EuroVelo 15, in record time tomorrow morning. There is a bakery at the bottom!

  1. 24 May - it's a cool grey day in Ottawa - perfect for binge watching the Relive videos with all their photos. I loved the tree blossoms, especially in the RV photos. Thanks for sharing.
