Video of the day: Europe Day 12
After a good night's sleep and a productive breakfast at Claudia's, we got off to an earlier start than usual. The breakfast was productive because Claudia helped clear up misconceptions we had about travelling by train with your bicycle on European trains. She also mentioned that today we would start seeing German Castles.
Hélène got us back quickly on Eurovelo 15 and on our way towards Koblenz. There is much discussion on which side of the Rhine offers the most interesting and scenic views. Some folks use many of the ferries to string together views. We decided to stick to the one so that we see the beautiful and not so beautiful.
The relief on either side of the Rhine started to change beyond Bonn. From relatively flats lands to small hills, high enough to build a castle on. We rode through: charming villages where you can spend hours; light and heavy industrial areas; sea containers processing yards and, our very first along the underside of an elevated Autobahn segment.
My best find today is ' The Old Crane' - erected 1554-59 and used until 1911. To the right of the door there is a large plaque and right above it, there are 3 small rectangular plaques one on top of each other. These plaques indicate the River Rhine high water mark for a specific year. The top plaque represents the height of the River Rhine in February 1784 at 11.09m.
Another day without rain and none forecasted until next Sunday (13 April).
