Day 42 - Vienna

Today we made use of a Hop-on and Hop-off bus service. We got on the bus stop that is a short walk from our apartment. You get two tours with the package: the City Tour which we did before lunch and the Palace tour after lunch. We decided after the tours to spend all of tomorrow visiting the Schönbrunn Palace and gardens.

Most of the majestic buildings we saw today are the results of serious expansion of the city by the then Emperor Franz Joseph I. The Old city walls were demolished and construction began.  Masonry construction was used and we were told that over 134 million bricks were used. The exterior of buildings is covered with a layer of cement about 1.5  inches thick. We know this because they are doing repairs on buildings in our district.

Something we enjoy doing is walking through our neighborhood on our way to grocery stores. I say stores because there is quite a bit of difference between grocery chains and even different stores within the same chain. I know that really blows our minds as well.  You can have a regular SPAR or a tiny neighbourhood SPAR or a gourmet SPAR. We look forward to visiting the Gourmet SPAR.

Tomorrow we get to use the underground metro and spend the day in a Palace!
